This is a general track for applications to any team at Canonical that works with web-centric tech (JS, TypeScript, React, CSS, Flutter), across all seniority levels.

Many of Canonical’s enterprise products have web front-ends. In order to create consistency across our products and sites, we have a central team that builds an open source React toolkit and presentation layer, the Vanilla Framework. We are excited to develop this further and see if we can help more open source projects build performant and accessible interfaces that respond well to diverse layouts. We use REST APIs for communication, and we consider API design an important part of the process.

We care about accessibility in our products and take time to work with designers.

Flutter is a new front-end technology that has the potential to unify our desktop and web development. We are growing the team's exposure to Flutter and have roles on both web and Ubuntu engineering for this specialism.

JOB DESCRIPTION
As a Web Frontend Software Engineer, this is a new critical role for us as we look to add new features which are aimed at expanding our fast growing user base. Your role extends to leveraging your technical expertise in front-end application development to create and maintain applications that cater to both external users and internal needs. In this process, you will continuously strive to develop innovative techniques for enhancing performance and interactivity. Key Responsibilities

  • Build smooth, stable, and secure web-based applications with React and TypeScript.
  • Collaborate with designers, product managers, and backend engineers to rapidly iterate on customer facing and internal facing web-based applications, products, and tools.
  • Take end to end ownership of new features and product lines shaping work in early stages, building, deploying and running post deployment analysis to ensure we’re hitting our goals.
  • Leverage your technical expertise in front-end application development in the creation and maintenance of both external and internal facing applications, and develop new techniques for improving performance and interactivity.

    Candidate Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree or greater within Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related subject
  • 3+ years of professional Software Development experience
  • Proficiency in JavaScript, including standard ES5+, Typescript, native DOM APIs, and ideally at React
  • Experience working with design to build custom pages and components, or able to independently follow existing conventions to iterate on required components to achieve usability requirements
  • Willing to dig into any part of code across different product lines
